If you’re working during this pandemic, it’s essential that your employer takes additional health and safety precautions to limit exposure to the virus that causes COVID-19. This applies whether you are returning to the workplace, or you never left. It is pretty surreal to try and put into words just how much has changed since my last report to you in March – and just how much work our union has done to address those changes in the last three months.

At the beginning of 2020, none of us could have imagined what the year had in store for us. It has been a very long hard year, for all of us. I am still so very proud of the work our members have done on the frontlines of the pandemic, of the way the leadership of our union at the local and provincial levels have fought to protect our members rights every step of the way, and of how our National Union and our staff have been there providing support whenever and wherever needed.

It has been just over a year since the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 to be a global pandemic, and everything changed. Looking back on the last 12 months, knowing the challenges we all faced, I cannot help but be proud of our union and how we responded in the face of this crisis.

This has been an extremely busy summer. In-person events have continued to increase, as we learn to adjust to the ongoing pandemic and find ways to gather safely despite it. Parallel rising inflation and interest rates are placing real pressure on CUPE members. COVID-19 also continues to take a toll on those in frontline jobs, who continue to face employers and governments who do not prioritize their health and safety.
